چکیده

[1] We show evidence of very recent ( 25–40 Myr) geologic activity on the eastern flank of Olympus Mons volcano that includes a suite of fluvial (channel networks), volcanic (emplacement of lava flows and dikes), and tectonic (wrinkle ridges and troughs) processes. The combination and youth of these features confirms the importance of geological activity continuing to the present on Mars. Citation: Basilevsky, A. T., S. C. Werner, G. Neukum, J. W. The Relationship between Lava Fans and Tubes on Olympus Mons in the Tharis

Introduction: The acquisition of image data from the Mars Odyssey THermal EMission Imaging System (THEMIS) and the European Space Agency’s Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) have enabled new observations, and in some cases interpretations, of small volcanic features in the Tharsis region of Mars. While image resolution limitations have traditionally hampered detailed inspection o...

The Formation History of Olympus Mons from Paleo-topography

Introduction: The Olympus Mons shield volcano on the northwestern edge of Mars’ Tharsis rise is the largest volcano in the solar system. Its volcanic history is intimately tied with the volcanic and geodynamic history of Tharsis and of Mars as a whole. Previous studies used crater counting to estimate the age of the flanks of Olympus, with typical values of ~200 Myr [1]. However, establishing t...

The volcanic history of Olympus Mons from paleo-topography and flexural modeling

Paleotopography and flexural modeling are here used to constrain the formation history and eruption rates of Olympus Mons, the tallest shield volcano on Mars. The timing of the initiation of significant edifice construction is constrained using lava flows whose paths deviate significantly from the downslope direction of the present-day flexural trough, and thus are classified as topographically...

Amazonis Planitia: The role of geologically recent volcanism and sedimentation in the formation of the smoothest plains on Mars

[1] Amazonis Planitia, located between the two main volcanic provinces on Mars (Tharsis and Elysium), is characterized by extremely smooth topography at several scale lengths, as smooth as oceanic abyssal plains topography on Earth. We use Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) data (primarily very high resolution Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) topography and derivative slope maps, gradient maps, and ...

Discrete Element Simulations of Volcanic Spreading: Implications for the Structure of Olympus Mons

Introduction: Large basaltic volcanoes, such as Olympus Mons on Mars, and the Hawaiian volcanoes on Earth, are thought to be subject to large scale slope failure and flank collapse, which scatter landslide and avalanche debris (a.k.a., aureole deposits) about the base of the edifice [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. Volcano growth may also be accompanied by gravitational relaxation of the edifice, refer...
